This was on Ingmar Bergman's top 3 list of best films ever! (as far I remember they asked which 3 films he would bring to a desert island. This was one of them.)

Kahn: I know color film popular then. I just have seen a bw trailer that used color slides.

I don't know if it's the original trailer but you certainly can cut color and black and white film together for projection. Color film was alive and well in 1953.
